Job Summary

From its conception, the Saint John Paul II National Shrine was intended as a response to Saint John Paul IIs call for a new evangelization, echoed today by Pope Francis. It strives to be a place of genuine encounter with the living God a place where God, who entered history, heals, and renews every dimension of human life and cultures.

The Visitor Services team at the Shrine aims to facilitate this encounter by engaging primarily, but not exclusively, with visitors and pilgrimage groups.

The Welcome Desk Assistant is one role on this team and sets the tone for the visitor experience with an initial interaction. The Welcome Desk Assistant is also the centre of information dissemination for all pilgrims and visitors at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine, and an important source of reference for other employees.

This is an hourly position through Nesco, a third-party contractor and includes regularly scheduled weekday, evening, and weekend hours.

Job Responsibilities

The following duties reflect the primary responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Incumbent(s) may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

Responsibility

1. WELCOME VISITORS: Greet pilgrims and visitors to the Shrine, provide information about the Shrines amenities, distribute information about upcoming activities at the Shrine, answer frequently asked questions, help visitors identify the general itinerary for their visit, direct visitors to the locations of their interest, direct visitors at the instruction of the Visitor Services Supervisor and provide general directions regarding the surrounding area. Percent of Time 50%

2. WELCOME DESK ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES: Provide general building reception duties such as answer incoming calls to the main number, route calls to Shrine staff, take messages, and announce appointments. Conduct and record attendee counts for various liturgical activities and events to gauge attendance, follow up with visitor group contacts on scheduled visits and appointments. Draft a daily report in collaboration with other Visitor Services team members on visitor activity. Act as the clearinghouse for items lost at the Shrine, maintain the lost and found, and receive general vendor inquiries. Maintain the Welcome Desk and adjacent storage area and keep an inventory. Restock brochures, flyers, and other approved Shrine materials as needed. Remove any unauthorized materials and keep the Welcome Desk and adjacent areas clear of clutter. Percent of Time 20%

3. GENERAL ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT: Engage in routine office tasks as needed, including but not limited to data entry, maintaining the Welcome Desk email inbox, compiling information, and preparing visitor information packets. Percent of Time 20%

4. ASSIST STAFF WITH LARGE GROUPS: Welcome arriving tour groups and inform Visitor Services staff of their arrival and assist as requested with managing the groups visit. Assist Shrine staff on peak visitor days and during special events to manage visitor flow, direct visitors to event locations, usher during Mass, and manage visitor lines to venerate the relic or to visit the exhibit. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position include an ability to function at a high level within a religious setting and a dynamic environment.

Friendly and engaging oral communication skills.

Demonstrated customer service excellence in a highly professional environment.

Knowledge and understanding of the Catholic Faith and its sacramental life.

Basic knowledge of local attractions (especially nearby religious sites), Metro, and Washington, DC.

Experience working with culturally diverse groups of people.

Knowledge of the life and legacy of Saint John Paul II preferred.

Ability to communicate in Spanish, French, Polish or another language a plus.

Availability year-round is preferred since the Shrine is open to the public 365 days a year including holidays.

Knowledge and understanding of the Knights of Columbus protocol a plus.

Systems/Technical Knowledge: e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.

Microsoft Outlook and Office, including Word and Excel.

Familiarity with answering and transferring calls on a multi-line phone.

Interactions

Reports to the Visitor Assistance Supervisor.

Within KofC: JP2 Shrine staff and members of Knights of Columbus councils.

Outside of KofC: Religious and school groups, arts and museum commissions, consultants, third party providers and vendors, visitors, members, general public, guest speakers.

Education and Experience Requirements

Education: High school diploma or GED, some college preferred

Experience: 1-3 years of related experience or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licensing/Certification: none.

Salary: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
