Why does the job exist?
This position exists to supervise staff for financial statement audits and agreed upon procedures of government agencies in New Mexico in a timely and professional manner. This position is expected to produce quality audit work papers within budgeted time and successfully supervise staff on the engagement. This position performs audit report reviews to help ensure quality audit reports are released by the office. This position also leads and/or participates in teams to perform quality control reviews of financial working papers completed by Independent Public Accountants. This position may perform additional assignments as needed by the Office of the State Auditor, such as projects for the Governmental Accountability Office or Special Investigations Division.
How does it get done?
- Prepares and reviews working papers and findings in accordance with auditing and accounting standards and ensures audit work is complete and accurate.
- Performs and reviews quality report reviews on audit reports within budgeted time.
- The audit supervisor completes an internal review guide while reviewing audit reports and writes any related report review comments.
- Leads and/or participates in teams that perform quality control reviews of financial audit working papers completed by independent public accountants by utilizing an internal review guide.
- The audit supervisor completes final documentation and writes any related working paper review comments.
- Performs any additional assignments as needed by the Office of the State Auditor.

Governmental agencies in New Mexico and Independent Public Accountants.
Ideal Candidate
Experience performing financial statement audits for governmental agencies.
Experience reviewing financial statement audit reports.
Ability to multi-task and accomplish projects simultaneously.
Ability to successfully work in a team environment.
Self motivated to learn and meet deadlines.
Good communication skills, both oral and written.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance and/or a related degree eighteen (18) semester hours of accounting or auditing (six (6) semester hours in finance or business law may substitute for up to six (6) semester hours of accounting or auditing) and four (4) years of experience conducting financial audits and attestation engagements of government agencies, or possession of an active New Mexico license as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or an application for a reciprocal New Mexico CPA license if the CPA license is from another state or territory (other than Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands) and (3) three years of experience conducting financial audits and attestation engagements of government agencies.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. A pre-employment background investigation is required and conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage with extended periods of sitting, standing, bending and/or reaching may be required. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. Employees are periodically required to work at auditee's location for extended periods of time. Working extended hours to include evenings and weekends may be required.
