Title:
Campus Security Officer

Department/Location: Campus Security - Elsah

Organizational Relationship: Reports to Director, Campus Security Supervisor(s), and Sr. Security Officers of Campus Security. This is considered an essential employee position, and shifts are organized to provide continuous 24/7 coverage year around.

Summary of responsibilities: This position serves the Principia community, guests and the visiting public through upholding Principia’s standard of safety and security, while prayerfully and metaphysically supporting campus safety and security. The Security Officer is responsible for providing a security presence and monitoring traffic, events, and the activities of people on campus, while attending and maintaining professional training and standards in accordance with departmental requirements. It is the duty of this position to respond to and assist the Principia community, visiting public and/or the police with security matters and/or emergencies. The ideal candidate should express good judgment, is detail oriented, respects and maintains confidentiality, and displays a strong sense of principle and integrity, along with a high comfort level working with a diverse campus population and having frequent public contact.

Work Performed - Essential Duties:

  • Works security shifts as scheduled
  • Patrols the campus by vehicle, foot or bicycle; monitors traffic; checks buildings; provides gatehouse coverage (for controlled campus access) to maintain a harmonious environment and experience
  • Executes building lock-ups as required
  • Keeps a daily activity log
  • Investigates and prepares reports for vehicle accidents
  • Investigates and reports after hour accidents and injuries
  • Conducts criminal investigation and prepares reports
  • Responds to burglar alarms at Hutchinson House when on-call
  • Responds to fire alarms and assists with building evacuations as needed
  • Works with local law enforcement and emergency response agencies during campus emergencies
  • Reports to work in the event of catastrophic emergencies as possible

Training and Additional Duties:

  • Follows police/security protocols in the event of personnel disturbances
  • Attends campus fire alarm and sprinkler system training; maintains annual 1st Aid/CPR/AED training; obtains CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training
  • Understands and knows how to operate emergency communication systems including the campus siren, building fire and tornado systems, and the DRMNS
  • Maintains on person a listing of emergency contact numbers security personnel need to know
  • Learns and remains knowledgeable of the Security Department Handbook and Departmental rules and general rules relevant to Principia standards; understands and supports the purpose of the Principia, and its rules and regulations

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Active (or pending) membership in the First Church of Christ, Scientist and/or in a Journal-listed branch church or society of the First Church of Christ, Scientist
  • Christian Science class instruction preferred, but not required
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to pass police/agency background security check and to pass police/security professional training course(s)
  • Working background in Security, preferred
