The City of Española is located in north-central New Mexico just north of Santa Fe in the Rio Grande valley amid mountain ranges and surrounding mesas. The area provides many recreation opportunities, including hiking, horseback riding, biking, whitewater rafting, and kayaking. In winter you can ski and snowboard at nearby Taos, Angel Fire, Santa Fe, and other ski areas. Cross-country skiing is also excellent. Española is rich in cultural heritage with Native American historical sites nearby including Anasazi sites at Bandelier National Monument and the Puye Cliff Dwellings. The region celebrates traditional Hispanic and Native cultures with fiestas held throughout the year.

The municipal boundaries of the City lie within both Rio Arriba and Santa Fe counties and the City is bordered by two sovereign nations, Santa Clara Pueblo and Ohkay Owingeh. The population of Española is just over 10,000 residents, but an estimated 30,000 people visit the City daily.

The Community Development Director plans and directs the activities of the Community Development Department which creates economic development strategies, by organizing to attract, retain, and expand business and industry in the City of Española; assists existing businesses in accordance with State of New Mexico and City of Española Local Economic Development Acts (LEDAs); coordinates City efforts relating to housing development initiatives; develops and implements branding and marketing initiatives for the City of Española including participation with New Mexico True and NM Film Office; will engage with community groups and stakeholders for the planning and promotion of City-sponsored events to facilitate tourism industry; solicits and coordinates development of various city-owned properties; will serve as a community liaison for numerous regional stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in economic development, planning and land use, business or public administration or similar field AND a minimum of two (2) years’ professional-level experience in economic development, business development, real estate development, community development/redevelopment, public relations/marketing, municipal planning or similar field; • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered; • Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver’s license and be insurable by City’s auto insurance provider; • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol tests; • Preferred experience in working with graphic illustration including Adobe, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
