About the Mishawaka Housing Authority
The Mishawaka Housing Authority (MHA) [affordablehousingmishawaka.com] seeks an experienced leader to execute on its mission of providing affordable housing to diverse residents. The MHA manages 399 units of public housing and also administers ~350 vouchers for market use. The combined annual budget for the MHA and its affiliates is ~$4,000,000. The City of Mishawaka is located in the South Bend, Indiana metro area, six miles from the University of Notre Dame and 90 miles from downtown Chicago.
The MHA oversees the following communities: Barbee Creek Village (148 family townhomes); Riverview 500 (113 unit senior housing tower in downtown Mishawaka); Vannoni Living Center (49 bed assistive living facility operating within Riverview 500); and 98 units of senior housing in repurposed historic school facilities (Battell School Apartments, Mary Phillips Apartments, and Mishawaka Main Junior High Apartments).
About the Executive Director Role
As the chief executive officer of the MHA, this position is responsible for the financial performance, regulatory compliance, and tenant safety and satisfaction at all managed properties. MHA’s executive director will provide leadership to the organization’s staff of housing, accounting, clinical, and maintenance professionals and interact extensively with department leaders. The executive director reports to a board of volunteer commissioners appointed by the City of Mishawaka.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Working with the board to fulfill the organization’s mission;
- Ensuring the financial health of the organization and its managed properties;
- Engaging with the greater community in strategic planning for future housing needs;
- Promoting internal operations that are legally-compliant, efficient, and in accordance with industry-recognized best practices
Qualifications for Executive Director Candidates
The ideal executive director candidate will have the following:
- Five or more years of experience in a senior leadership role, ideally as the executive of a non-profit organization or senior leader of a business enterprise
- A collaborative working style, coupled with a pragmatic management skills, a problem-solving approach, transparent communication, and mentoring ability
- Knowledge of, or ability and willingness to learn, HUD-related public housing and Section 8 regulations and procedures and development finance regulations and requirements.
- Knowledge in, or ability and willingness to learn, the diverse areas supervised: financial oversight, property management, assisted living services and property development.
