Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development, and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The NREL Computational Science Center (CSC) has an immediate opening for HPC User Operations Support. The Advanced Computing Operations teams supports High-Performance Computing, Data-Intensive Computing, and computing using public cloud services.
Your job will be front-line support for the High-Performance Computing user community which includes scientists, researchers, and students at many levels of education and experience.
Job duties shall include:
  • Respond to requests for technical support. Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve problems for individuals in an efficient manner.
  • Contribute to internal and external technical documentation.
  • Run diagnostic tests to isolate issues and escalate as needed.
  • Document customer issues, communicate service information to users, and record actions using ticketing systems.
  • Collaborate and consult with the Computational Science Center's systems administrators, scientists, and researchers to resolve technical issues for users.
  • Manage multi-factor authentication tokens, authorization, safeguarding data, and assisting clients as needed.
  • HPC job scheduling support using tools such as Moab, Torque, PBS, and Slurm.
  • Troubleshooting and compiling from source code on Linux-based systems.
  • Collect and organize information:
    • Maintain documentation by ensuring that latest processes and forms are available to the user community, including the team wiki and website.
    • Compile a list of publications generated by projects utilizing Advanced Computing resources.
    • Solicit Principal Investigators and Project Leads for Annual Progress Reports and other required deliverables.
  • Reporting:
    • Regular and ad hoc reporting as required by gathering usage metrics and tracking project requests.
    • Retrieve, organize and report data to assist the operations group and stakeholders in reaching meaningful conclusions and making business decisions.
    • Monitor and report progress towards the completion of projects and deliverables.

Basic Qualifications
Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience. General knowledge and application of standards, principles, concepts and techniques in specific field. Some understanding of related IS practices and standards. Skilled in analytical techniques and practices, and problem solving. Skilled in written and verbal communication. Intermediate programming ability with various computer software programs and information systems.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Excellent communication skills; able to work and communicate effectively with people at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent multi-tasking skills; prioritizes and performs a variety of concurrent tasks with minimal direction.
  • Some experience creating reports in visual formats and an ability to analyze data, particularly in Microsoft Excel.
  • Working knowledge and experience with Linux, Windows, and Mac end-user computers.
  • Strong familiarity with the Linux command line and SSH.
  • Familiarity compiling applications on Linux systems (e.g. Makefiles, configure, and make).
  • Ability to understand and troubleshoot user workflow.
  • Demonstrated ability to work professionally as part of a team and directly with the users.
  • Proactive approach to customer service.
Level II applications: Must complete a background investigation and receive a favorable determination to obtain a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card under Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12).
Preferred Qualifications
Python programming language experience desired.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: IT Professional II / Annual Salary Range: $77,600 - $139,700
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
