The Disabilities Network of Eastern CT, Inc. (DNEC), a non-profit agency located in Norwich, CT provides services to people with disabilities that reside in Eastern Connecticut. Title: Advocate

Job Type: Full-time

Regular Hours: Monday-Friday

The Advocate creates, provides, and coordinates services that support individuals with disabilities rights, empowers individuals to live independently and advocate for change that helps individuals become included in their community. They also provide support and function as a liaison between families, staff, and the community.

Essential Functions:

These are essential functions of the job, which the applicant must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation, following training and supervision as assigned:

  • Answer Information and Referral requests from individuals and organizations
  • Provide advocacy and independent living skills training/referrals
  • Work with diverse populations, disabilities, and age groups
  • Provide diversity and training to area employers, community leaders, service groups, churches, and others.
  • Must have reliable transportation to meet with persons with disabilities in their homes and other locations in the community.
  • Maintain case files and submit records and reports in a timely manner.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all sensitive information.
  • Performs related duties as assigned by the Program Director and the Executive Director.
  • Ability to travel and work flexible hours as the job necessitates.
  • Excellent people, communications, organizational, and computer skills, dependability, and a superior work ethic.
  • Internally motivated, able to work independently as well as with the team.
  • Attend required trainings and staff development activities.
  • Occasional weekend or evening meetings.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Commitment to the philosophy of self-determination of all persons, including persons with disabilities.
  • Intermediate computer skills with Microsoft Office products, Word, Excel, Power Point, etc. Willingness and ability to learn new software and database.
  • Excellent oral, written, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to be a team player, take supervision, act with professional deportment and confidentiality.
  • Must have the willingness to submit to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Willingness to obtain First Aid, CPR, AIRS, and other required training.
  • No history of felony or serious criminal convictions.
