Job description
The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Virginia’s (UVA) School of Medicine, seeks highly-motivated, engaged candidates for either a Lab Specialist, Lab Specialist Intermediate, or Senior Lab Specialist to conduct research in the Larner/Genetta Lab. We have identified the transcription factor and master regulator of the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), ZEB1 as a key molecule that functions directly in the repair of double-stranded Breaks by recruiting the repair pathway- choice protein 53BP1.
A background in molecular genetics/gene regulation is preferred but not required; candidate should have demonstrated proficiency in standard biochemical and molecular techniques. The successful applicant will be expected to independently design, execute and critically interpret experiments and to work both independently and as part of a team. This is an ideal position for someone with an interest in pursuing research as a career and/or graduate studies in molecular genetics-related fields. Genuine, tangible contributions will lead to authorship.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Perform and assist with experiments involving cell culture, Western blotting, DNA and RNA isolation, PCR and quantitative PCR.
Work with the senior scientists to develop methodologies and protocol for ongoing lab projects.
Assist with the collection and entry of data in electronic media.
Order lab supplies.
Perform routine laboratory maintenance.
Perform routine laboratory data analysis and procedures.
Independently prepare solutions and reagents.
Ultimately, be responsible for their own research project.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Minimum requirements for Lab Specialist:
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: 3 years of experience. 6 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
Anticipated hiring range for this level: $15/hour-$21.86/hour
Minimum requirements for Lab Specialist Intermediate:
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: 6 years of experience in a lab technician role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
Anticipated hiring range for this level: $45,302-$58,836 commensurate with education and experience.
Minimum requirements for Senior Lab Specialist:
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: 9 years of experience in a lab technician role. May substitute with Master's or Terminal degree plus 4 years of experience in a lab technician role and supervisory experience. 12 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
Anticipated hiring range for this level: $50,000-$67, 585 commensurate with education and experience.

Experience with:
RT-PCR based assays
FLOW Cytometry/FACS
Protein analysis/Immunological techniques
Tissue culture techniques
Histological techniques/IF staining
Microscopy techniques/Analysis
Enzymatic assays/micro-titer plate-based analysis
Working with Tumor models
Animal handling (mice) and compliance
Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as standard computer literacy.
Some Leadership and supervisory ability
Physical Demands
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
