Seeking motivated, qualified Pathologists' Assistant manager with demonstrated skill and interest in managing a busy academic medical center grossing lab. Candidate must be team-oriented and able to work independently and as part of a team. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong interpersonal and criticial thinking skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, inlcuding Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Initiate and lead improvement projects and optimize processes and procedures. Familiarity with Epic information systems. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
JOB SUMMARY: Provides oversight and management of the daily operations of the Operating Room Pathology Laboratory and provide services in Anatomic Pathology under direction of a qualified pathologist.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university with successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Pathologist's Assistant program and five years' experience as a Pathologist's Assistant. Previous supervisory experience preferred.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: Certified as a Pathologist's Assistant by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Oversees and manages the daily operations of the OR Pathology Laboratory.
- Provides training and direction to Accessioners, Pathologist Assistants, Residents, and Operating Room Pathology Laboratory support staff to include technical procedures, safety and general department procedures.
- Leads department in quality assurance/quality improvement activities and compliance with CLIA, CAP, JCHO, and other regulatory agencies. Provide data for the monthly Surgical Pathology Quality Assurance reports.
- Participates in the recruitment and selection of new pathology assistants. Complete performance evaluation and maintain personnel files of employees in the section.
- Performs administrative duties related to review and revising of pathology protocols, procedures, & reports.
- Ensures implementation of all operating room tissue-based research protocols, including procurement of samples, processing of samples, and notification of investigators regarding sample readiness. Implement new pathology protocols and procedures, as necessary.
- Coordinates resident training and scheduling with Residency Director. Teach junior (first and second year) residents proper grossing techniques, as described in the Pathology Department's standard gross pathology protocols. Review resident rotation schedules with the chief and/or senior residents.
- Performs gross processing and preparation of operating room and clinic specimens, including photography, gross dictation, and preparation of related surgical pathology reports. Prepare specimens for special studies such as flow cytometry and molecular analysis. Performs and assists on triaging operating room specimens securing proper handling. Assist on frozen section preparation of operating room specimens, including preparation of cryostat sections and smears/imprints and staining of slides for microscopic examination.
- Performs and ensures daily, weekly, monthly, and annual equipment maintenance is performed according established procedures.
- Organizes and directs supply ordering.
- Performs other duties as directed.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS: Excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to supervise, advise and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise. Knowledge of accession, dissection, anatomical description, and histological sampling methods and techniques. Knowledge of gross room pathology procedures, protocols, and techniques. Knowledge of procedures, regulations, and standards of the acquisition of human tissue specimens. Knowledge and experience with personal computers including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and statistics. Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards. Knowledge of chemical reagents and equipment used in pathology research.
WORK ENVIRONMENT : Exposure to infection from disease-bearing specimens or patients. Exposure to risk of blood borne/airborne disease. Must wear protective equipment (gloves, gowns/lab coats, eye protection, face protection). Subject to cuts from microtome knives. Exposure to hazards for electrical/mechanical/power equipment. Possible exposure to odorous chemicals and specimens. Possible exposure to toxic/flammable/explosive chemicals and gases. Subject to injury from moving parts of equipment. Moderate noise environment. Subject to injury from sharps. May require judgement/action which could result in death of patient. Subject to many interruptions. Subject to stressful situations.
