Overview
The Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) is seeking a highly motivated and passionate post-doctoral fellow to join our team as a Citizen Science, STEM Education, and Outreach Fellow. The fellow will work on two related projects – the Molecular Observatory Network (MONet) and a U.S. Department of Energy-funded project focused on understanding and modelling the response of coastal urban systems to environmental extremes. This position will be based in Richland, WA.
As a Citizen Science, STEM Education, and Outreach Fellow, you will work closely with the MONet/Urban Coasts team to develop, implement, and evaluate citizen science sampling campaigns and educational and outreach programs focused on environmental biogeochemistry, microbiology, and climate science. You will play a critical role in promoting MONet and advancing its mission of creating and educating the scientific community on how to utilize a regional-scale database of molecular and microscale soil parameters from across the United States. You will also be vital to engaging urbanized communities, particularly underrepresented groups and students, in place-based learning.
The postdoc will help build a cross-disciplinary learning ecosystem focused on citizen science and environmental justice; co-organize and deliver workshops on community-engaged research practices; develop good working relations with community partners; design and support community-engaged student research; and contribute to academic and public-facing publications that share both the methods and results of the MONet/Urban Coasts projects.
MONet/Urban Coasts consists of laboratory and field-based approaches, in coordination with local and national collaborators. This approach requires significant planning, organization, coordination, and communication. The candidate must have strong communication and organizational skills. All candidates will be expected to engage in open and community-based science and/or outreach.
This is a full-time position anticipated to last 2 years (a 3rd year is possible, contingent on performance). Start date is flexible in the spring, summer, or fall of 2023.

Responsibilities
- Engage with stakeholders in the scientific community, including educators, researchers, citizens, and industry professionals, to promote MONet/Urban Coasts and their missions.
- Develop and implement community-based sampling programs that benefit project scientific goals and place-based learning
- Develop and implement educational programs and materials that communicate the latest advances in environmental molecular science to a variety of audiences, including MONet proposal teams, local stakeholders, high school students, undergraduate and graduate students, and the general public.
- Collaborate with the MONet/Urban Coasts team to translate scientific research findings into accessible and engaging educational content, such as workshops, webinars, and hands-on activities.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of citizen science and educational programs and modify programs as necessary to improve outcomes.
- Assist in the planning and execution of outreach events, such as science fairs, training workshops, community events, and professional conferences.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in environmental science, chemistry, biology, or a related field OR PhD in social science or education with a focus on environmental studies
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to a variety of audiences.
- Experience in science education, community science initiatives, and outreach for diverse audiences.
- Experience and demonstrated ability in developing partnerships with community organizations.
- Experience with teaching and/or mentoring students and citizens from historically marginalized communities.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, with strong organizational and time management skills.
- Familiarity with molecular and microstructural soil science, biogeochemistry, environmental microbiology, or related research is a plus.
