The USC Equity Research Institute (ERI) is hiring a Data Analyst (Project Specialist). ERI is a research unit headed by Professor Manuel Pastor and situated within the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts & Sciences. Founded in 2007, ERI provides forward-looking, actionable research to support community-based organizations, funders, and other stakeholders working towards social, racial, economic, and environmental justice. ERI produces data-driven analysis and rigorous research to inform movements and policy; leads convenings and communications that deepen and broaden our reach into key audiences; engages in strategic collaborations that leverage our strengths for broader impact; and models an effective, sustainable, and racially-just research center. The Data Analyst will play a critical role in analyzing, preparing, and disseminating information that advances justice and equity in Los Angeles, California, and the nation. at ERI, the Data Analyst will not only produce rigorous quantitative and qualitative research, but will also help shape the messaging and strategic frameworks that influence public policy, grant making, coalition building, and on-the-ground campaigns. Through conference planning, public presentations, and professional development opportunities, the Data Analyst will also become part of a network of leading researchers, policy makers, and grassroots organizers dedicated to using data to advance racial, economic, and social justice.

The data analyst/project specialist will require a mix of skills: familiarity with quantitative and qualitative research strategies, an ability to use statistical and GIS software, experience in statistical analysis and testing, and an ability to make all this relevant to communities and organizations. The Specialist should be familiar with public datasets, particularly Census data; have an ability to help conduct basic analyses; and should be able to build graphs, maps, and other materials for messaging and communications through reports, presentations, organizing and facilitating convenings, and other forms of dissemination. The Specialist may also engage in qualitative interview work, coordinate with community-based research partners, engage in report and article writing, and participate in strategic planning/organizational development activities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in urban planning, economics, public policy, or related social science (e.g., sociology, social work)
  • Three years experience of relevant work experience conducting research to support policy development, advocacy, or organizing
  • A commitment to racial, economic, and social justice and to ERI mission and goals

Compensation

  • The hourly range for this position is $29 - $35. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
